About Region 9A

UAW Region 9A covers 34 locals and counting in eastern New York (including the New York City metropolitan area, the Hudson Valley, and the Capital District area), Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, and Puerto Rico.

Region 9A's membership is incredibly diverse, representing active and retired workers in a wide variety of industries including manufacturing, design, gaming, legal services, child care, higher education, cultural institutions, government, and more.

Our region provides support to our locals and new organizing campaigns around organizing, bargaining with employers, enforcing contracts, striking, educating members, building political power, and more.

About the International UAW

The International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace, and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW), was founded in 1935 and is headquartered in Detroit, Michigan, with nine geographic regions across the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico.

The UAW's International Executive Board (IEB) consists of five officers—the President, Secretary-Treasurer, and three Vice Presidents—and nine Regional Directors, who are directly elected by the UAW membership.

For an introduction to the International UAW, read Solidarity magazine's New Member Issue.

Our Locals & Organizing Campaigns

Local unions are units of the UAW comprised of members who work for the same employer or share a common interest in their work conditions. Local unions that are comprised of members who work for different employers are amalgamated. New organizing campaigns may join an existing local or form a new local once they ratify their first contract.

There are over 600 UAW local unions, with 34 and counting located in Region 9A. Local unions establish their own bylaws, hold membership meetings, elect executive board and bargaining committee members, enforce contracts by handling grievances, and run standing committees.
