UAW Leaders in Puerto Rico Fight Back Against Efforts to Freeze Minimum Wage
Over 20 unions and organizations including UAW are fighting back against a last-minute bill to be voted on today that would eliminate Puerto Rico’s Minimum Wage Evaluation Commission (CESM), effectively freezing the local minimum wage.
“The CESM has been key in this process by functioning as an independent, multi-sectoral, and scientifically based entity to periodically evaluate the minimum wage. Thus, the minimum wage is not subject to lobbying by specific groups, but rather to an objective and balanced analysis that puts the country's benefit first,” said Wilkin López, UAW Region 9A servicing representative who serves as the workers' representative on the Minimum Wage Evaluation Commission.
This bill, the product of aggressive lobbying by business groups, aims to return the responsibility for reviewing the minimum wage to the Legislative Assembly. The last time this happened, almost 25 years passed without significant increases.

Sobre veinte sindicatos y organizaciones incluso UAW presentaron están luchando contra un proyecto de ley de última hora—que se votará hoy—que eliminaría la Comisión de Evaluación del Salario Mínimo (CESM) de Puerto Rico, congelando de hecho el salario mínimo local.
“La CESM ha sido clave en ese proceso al funcionar como una entidad independiente, multisectorial y con base científica para evaluar periódicamente el salario mínimo. Así, el salario mínimo no queda sujeto al cabildeo de grupos específicos, sino al análisis objetivo y balanceado que pone el beneficio del país primero”, dijo Wilkin López, portavoz de la UAW y representante de los trabajadores en la Comisión Evaluadora del Salario Mínimo.
Este proyecto, producto de un agresivo cabildeo de grupos empresariales, pretende devolver a la Asamblea Legislativa la responsabilidad de revisar el salario mínimo. La última vez que eso ocurrió, pasaron casi 25 años sin aumentos significativos.
