LOCAL & ORGANIZING UPDATES

NYU Contract Faculty United to Hold Strike Authorization Vote Next Week

NYU Vote

NYU Contract Faculty United (CFU-UAW), which represents close to 950 full-time tenure-track professors and librarians, announced that members will vote to authorize a strike beginning February 9. The strike authorization vote announcement came just days after the union’s 23rd bargaining session with the school’s administration on January 30.

In February 2024, contract faculty voted by an overwhelming 89% in favor of unionizing, with two-thirds of all faculty participating in the vote. Nearly two years later, CFU is still fighting the university’s delay tactics to reach a first contract that provides fair and equitable support for contract faculty at NYU.

“With higher education under attack, we have repeatedly offered the administration opportunities to show they understand the stakes of this moment and that they stand on the side of academic freedom and free speech,” Elisabeth Fay, a clinical associate professor in the Faculty of Arts and Science said.

COMMUNITY ACTION PROGRAM (CAP)

UAW Biannual Political Conference to Bring 1,000 UAW Members to Capitol Hill

MI Forum

The UAW will hold our biannual Community Action Program (CAP) Conference in Washington, DC, starting Sunday, bringing together nearly 1,000 union members from across the country to strategize and build power for the working class.

The conference agenda will focus on the UAW’s political vision and four core priorities: wages, health care, retirement, and time off. Participants will also address the growing threats to the American Dream posed by corporate greed and divide-and-conquer politics.

On Wednesday, February 11, the union will hold its first candidate forum of 2026, featuring leading candidates who are running for Michigan’s U.S. Senate. The forum will be livestreamed on UAW social channels.

Visit uaw.org/cap2026 for more information about the conference.

Urgent Action: Protect Legal Precedent on Workers' Rights & Tribal Sovereignty

Foxwoods

UAW is asking our members to take two minutes and contact your Congressional representative to oppose H.R. 1723, the misleadingly named Tribal Labor Sovereignty Act of 2025.

UAW deeply believes in tribal sovereignty and has a strong record in supporting civil rights throughout our history. This bill, however, seeks to overturn National Labor Relations Board precedent in order to attack fundamental collective bargaining rights. It would strip workers in certain commercial enterprises, including UAW members, of rights and protections under the NLRA.

In sum, this bill threatens to create a dangerous precedent that could be used to weaken landmark worker and civil rights protections—including minimum wage, OSHA, and ERISA—for all employees on tribal lands. Use this form to send your Congress member a letter!

New York Labor for Tax the Rich Phone Bank
Tuesday, February 10 | 6:30 - 8:30 PM | Virtual

Tax the Rich

Workers and working families keep this economy running–and we deserve an economy that puts working people first. So this budget season, we’re demanding that Albany tax the rich, to fund an affordable New York. It’s time for us to come together and make sure Albany delivers.

Join us to call our neighbors, and ask them to pressure their legislator and demand a state budget that invests in workers and the public services we all rely on. Featuring Assemblymember Claire Valdez, and speakers from PSC-CUNY and UAW-9A.

UAW Members Field Trip to Albany with Our Time
Wednesday, February 25 | New York to Albany, NY

Field Trip to Albany

UAW Region 9A is joining New Yorkers United for Child Care, the Working Families Party, and more in getting on the bus to Albany.

Together with a coalition of partners, we’re bringing thousands of New Yorkers to Albany for a march and rally to demand a New York we can actually afford. We’re calling on state leaders to tax the rich and invest in the public goods working families need and deserve, including universal childcare, permanently affordable housing, and fast and free buses.

We’re coordinating a fleet of buses leaving NYC early in the morning (around 6am) and returning in the evening. More details about the day and transportation to come. Before the trip, join a mass call with Our Time at 8 PM on Monday, February 9, to learn more about how our growing coalition can force Gov. Hochul to tax the rich and fund the New York we deserve.

This is our moment to show Albany the power of working people, and to demand that the richest New Yorkers finally pay what they owe so we can fund a New York we can afford. You won’t want to miss it.

Stand with NYSNA Nurses on Strike Across NYC

Stand with NYSNA Nurses on Strike Across NYC

Right now, more than 15,000 registered nurses in New York City are engaged in one of the largest nurses’ strikes in the city’s history. They’ve walked off the job because hospitals have refused to negotiate fair contracts that protect both nurse and patient safety, enforceable staffing standards, and secure healthcare benefits that frontline caregivers need to deliver quality care. This isn’t just about wages or convenience. It is fundamentally about putting patient care and community health first.

What you can do to support NYSNA:

  1. Join a picket line. A strong, visible community presence boosts morale and sends a clear message that this fight is about public health and dignity—not just for nurses, but for all of us who depend on their care. NYSNA picket lines run daily, typically from early morning through the afternoon (busiest from noon to 3 PM).
  2. Donate to the NYSNA Protected Action Hardship Relief Fund. Nurses on strike are often going without pay while continuing to fight for all of us, and many face real financial strain. Contributions to this hardship fund go directly to support striking members.
  3. Spread the word and take action. Share information on social media, email hospital leadership demanding fair contracts, and encourage others in your networks to stand up for patient safety and workers’ rights.

Thanks to our UAW members who have already stood with NYSNA on the picket line!

Join AFL-CIO Frontline Solidarity Trainings on Immigrants’ Rights

Frontline Solidarity

The Constitution protects everyone, regardless of immigration status. In the context of escalating militarization and immigration enforcement around the county, understanding our rights is vital for workers and our families. These trainings will cover the rights and protections we all have when it comes to interacting with law enforcement, including immigration agents, so we are prepared to exercise our constitutional rights at home, at work and in the community.

Know Your Rights: Constitutional Protections and Immigration Enforcement

The mass deportation agenda is a deeply anti-worker agenda that hurts workers, unions, and the economy. These trainings will provide participants with information to navigate the escalating attacks on immigrant workers and discuss resources available for unions and organizers.

This course offers and in-depth examination of the U.S. healthcare system, how we compare to other countries, and who really benefits from it. We’ll consider how healthcare impacts collective bargaining, how insurance companies behave, and how the Canadian healthcare system works. And we’ll look at the possibility of a solution that can deliver high-quality, affordable healthcare for everyone.
