Today, UAW President Shawn Fain, Vice President Rich Boyer, Region 9A Director Brandon Mancilla, and UAW Local Presidents met with La Junta, Puerto Rico’s Fiscal Control Board, to demand that both La Junta and the Puerto Rican government end the deadlock and bargain for fair contracts now.

La Junta was established by the U.S. Congress in Puerto Rico following the passage of the PROMESA law in 2016 to oversee debt restructuring. Its austerity policies have led to massive layoffs, frozen pensions and salaries, and a general crisis for the Puerto Rican working class.

Workers haven’t seen a raise since 2017, and the working class has made countless sacrifices during the island’s fiscal and environmental crises. At the meeting, UAW leaders pledged to fight harder than ever for our membership and in solidarity with the rest of the Puerto Rican labor movement.
