Noguchi Museum & Newbury Comics Workers File NLRB Petitions for Union Elections
Two new units in Region 9A announced they filed petitions for union elections at the NLRB. Most recently, 51 warehouse workers at Newbury Comics in Boston filed to unionize with Local 1596 in Massachusetts. This is the first union at the comic book and music retailer, which has 29 stores in six states.
On November 30, Local 2110 petitioned the NLRB for a vote on unionization at the Noguchi Museum in Long Island City, New York. The wall-to-wall union will include educators, gallery attendants, curators, archivists, retail, warehouse, facilities and other administrative staff. Staff members cite low wages, a need for greater transparency, health and safety conditions and greater job security as reasons for unionizing.
"We all care about the Noguchi Museum, and I want the working conditions to be sustainable so that staff can continue doing the jobs that we love,” Austin Kim, Archives Associate says. “We are dedicated to advancing the work and legacy of Isamu Noguchi, and we are proud of our collective contribution to the museum’s growth. Unionizing is an important next step for the longevity of the institution.” Follow the Noguchi Union on Instagram for updates.
