On June 15, 2020 the Supreme Court has extended federal civil rights protection in the workplace to all LGBTQ employees.  This clearly states that the inclusion of “sex” in the Civil and Human Rights Act covers the LGBTQ community.  So, there is no reason to clarify or add those pronouns because it inclusive of sexual orientation.  That’s major.

The Civil Rights Committee is responsible for ensuring that the full rights of all members of the Union are not infringed upon by the reason of race, color, age, sex, or creed.

The Civil and Human Rights Committee is an essential guardian of the “No Discrimination” policy of our union.  Members of this committee fulfill the local union’s commitment to assure members full rights regardless of religion, race, creed, color, sex, political affiliation, national origin, age, disability, marital status or sexual orientation.

The committee listens to our memebers.  We can help with informing members of steps and procedures whenever a member or members believe their rights have been violated, either by management or other union members.  The committee works toward the elimination of discrimination in the workplace, the community and the nation.

Members of this committee have the opportunity to keep the local union moving forward toward the fulfillment of our UAW commitment on the civil rights front.

This committee needs members who feel a moral obligation to speak out on the issues of intolerance, injustice and bigotry and to rebuke any person or group that expresses such activity.

The Civil and Human Rights Committee is here for our Members

Need someone to talk to about an issue or problem you may be having, but don't want to necessarily talk to a Councilor or Grievance Rep?

We can help

We can help you evaluate your situation for appropriate action, and if necessary, help you through the process of approaching your Councilor to get an issue resolved.

One of our goals is to also help educate and enlighten our membership on issues and topics that are relative now.  Through planning, implementing and promoting programs like civic, labor movement and community outreach, we will help recognize the need to ensure compliance of civil and human rights, protect from discrimination, civil liberties, equal opportunity, equal access, equal protection and all rights afforded under the Constitution of the United States of America.

We will also educate our membership on the rich history between Walter Reuther(UAW President, 1946-1970) and Dr. Martin Luther King and how they helped shape the civil rights movement.

We will feature key articles and happenings in our area when they become available..
